Paul Brandon Gilbert nasceu em 6 de novembro de 1966 em Carbondale, Illinois, EUA. Aos cinco anos ganhou uma guitarra e um amplificador de brinquedo de presente de seus pais. Pouco tempo depois começou a ouvir grandes bandas de heavy metal clássico e hard rock como Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Kiss, Heart e Black Sabbath. Mais tarde, dois grandes shows tiveram um forte impacto em sua decisão de ser músico: Van Halen e Ozzy Osbourne (com Randy Rhoads).

Paul Gilbert foi professor de Buckethead.Por muito tempo imaginou-se que os dois seriam a mesma pessoa, hoje em dia essa hipótese já foi descartada e existem provas de que não são a mesma pessoa, como por exemplo datas de apresentação de Paul Gilbert e Buckethead coincidirem num mesmo dia e hora em locais diferentes ou muito distantes.
